I am not nowhere, but I assume the OP is addressing me.
Maybe it's just you being an inexperienced traveller, but you are responsible for phone charges made regardless if the phone rates are posted or not.
If the rates are not posted, then you/your party should have called the front desk to inquire about rates before making calls.
As for buttons on phone, I always hit the button/lever manually before putting the receiver down. And, after putting the receiver down, I make sure it's seated. I have never met a phone that could not be hang up.
If you feel you have been discriminated against at non-PC places, I do feel for you.
If you have gotten what you perceived to be disdained looks because you are disputing a phone bill from what I see you are responsible for, I can understand where the hotel manager is coming from.
If you feel you didn't get an Ambassador upgrade, perhaps there might have been a valid reason you didn't get one. Did you ask for one during check in? Was this during a peak period? Was there a possibility there are no available rooms to upgrade you to? Because rooms aren't always available when we want them to be.
