It wasn’t just “local resistance.” Hamilton is located on land that has subsided, with much of area sitting 5 to 15 feet below sea level, which is why a large portion was converted into a tidal wetlands restoration project. It is also part of the broader Bay Area subsidence, where land is sinking due to soil compaction and groundwater extraction.
