Easy: just try booking an award with the companion cert attached for, say, three travelers. You will get this error:
This discount code only applies to 2 passenger(s). Update the number of passengers in your booking to try again.
So no, your reservation with the cert must be for exactly two passengers. Also, your elite status may get you and one companion into the extended legroom section on AS/HA. Preferred seating selection seems to extend to all travelers on the reservation (but isn't really worth that much). Boarding... IME gate agents generally let companion board with the elite even if their boarding group is higher, whether on the same reservation or not.
