You only get 3x on the Explorer and the insurance is far worse than with the CSR. Your status earning to get the additional 6x points has nothing to do with the card you use, you are only required to be a United card holder. Once I put 4K spend on my Quest card to get the SUB. I stuck it in my safe and am booking 100% of my travel expense on the CSR for the better yield and insurance.
I'm guessing that the OP (currently) has the Sapphire Preferred card, which only gets 2X on flights purchased directly from the airlines. But as I suggested up-thread, the $5,000+ UA ticket purchase might be a good opportunity to sign up for the Sapphire Reserve.
