I think you're missing something:

"9X total miles on eligible United flights


"6x miles on the Primary Cardmember’s fare from United as a MileagePlus member, plus 3x miles on entire United purchase with the United℠ Explorer Card."

(Emphasis added.)

Looks like the difference attributed to using the United Explorer card is 3X spend vs. 2X spend for the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

This might be a good opportunity to get the Chase Sapphire Reserve card for one year, to get the 125,000-point SUB, and 4X spend for flights booked directly with an airline.
