  • The UK simply stated that terrorist attacks could not be ruled out: a common mantra the Foreign Office applies widely in its advice to travellers


The 2015 murder of 38 people at a Tunisian beach resort by a terrorist inspired by Islamic State (IS) was a sharp reminder that disregarding the implications of earlier terrorist incidents in the country had not been a wise move.

So no doubt the Maldive knife attacks in 2020, on two Chinese, one Turk and an Australian, all claimed by IS, provoked the circumspection of government departments responsible for advising tourists on safety issues.
