The rules state that you need to be on a * flight number flying on * metal.

I suspect that the system checks the "primary" flight number for the sector flown and if it's eligible awards points based on the class.

This would explain why an LH flight on BD metal awards points at the BD levels (by default) and why some LH flights which are oprated by partner airlines post as they do not have their own number.
