If CM has 7M9 then I would try to book that in J - nice lie-flats! Often very competitive prices. Check if the de-novo purchase on CM is cheaper than the UA ticket first. UA will certainly offer a refund, if you prefer. EZE-PTY-LAX is not a bad trip, but flight times aren't great (neither will be AV).

No E+ seating (anymore) on CM with UA*G, but agents at check-in or the gate are usually quite willing to give E+ seats to UA*G - no guarantee though! I would book J on the 7M9 anyway
Well, I checked with an agent, and they can change the routing, but they want me to go EZE-PTY-IAH-LAX (2 stops, just like Avianca), which i was hoping to avoid esp traveling with a pet this route.

While this is true, for some reason, I think they can only book code share flights (but only a guess), and I might get clarification if i call them again.

Meanwhile, I can go from EZE-PTY-LAX relatively smoothly booking directly on COPA

noW, i have to hope i can make my RT just a one way, not sure how accomodating UA will be with that, but worst case , i cancel the whole reservation and just book a one way on UA on the way back
