WS introduces "temporary" fuel surcharge on companion vouchers
Email just received but can't say I'm that surprised:
I want to share an important update and provide transparency on an upcoming change to our companion voucher pricing.
In response to rising jet fuel prices, WestJet is introducing a temporary fuel surcharge on all bookings made with a companion voucher. As of April 8, 2026, this surcharge will be reflected in the “Other ATC” portion of your booking. All companion voucher bookings completed before April 8, 2026, will not be affected.
Why is this surcharge only applied to bookings that use companion vouchers?
Regular airfares can be adjusted several times a day and have greater pricing flexibility than companion vouchers, where the companion fare is a fixed amount by region and cabin.
Fuel is the largest contributor to airline operating costs, and this temporary surcharge helps us manage the recent surge in fuel prices. Companion vouchers continue to be available for bookings across WestJet’s entire network, with no blackout dates and the ability to use them on any Economy or Premium fare.
WestJet remains committed to helping members save on travel through WestJet Rewards. We will continue to assess the surcharge and adjust it as conditions allow; once jet fuel prices return to normal levels, we will remove this fuel surcharge from “Other ATC” on companion voucher bookings.
Thank you for your understanding as we navigate this exceptionally high fuel cost environment.
Sincerely,
Steve McClelland
