Change and Standby Question
Good Morning All,

I have a ... possibly weird question, and I figured, if y'all say it's impossible, then I'll take your word for it.
My goal is to fly SFO to ORD to ORF. all in one day with the longest layover possible. (on April 2nd if possible)
I'm trying to buy tickets on UA1045, and UA1178.
But on United, it is only allowing me to buy UA1045 + UA2137 OR UA1954 + UA1178 OR UA1568 + UA1178
My friend just bought the UA1568+UA1178 flight, and told me to just go to the airport and fly standby on UA1045. Is this safe/reliable?

Question: Is there a way to buy UA1045 and UA1178 on one ticket. And if not, should I buy UA1045+UA2137 and try for UA1178 standby, or UA1568+UA1178 and try for UA1045 standby?
