I have a mixed data point to share on the buying E+ seat method -
Already had a standard domestic Economy ticket booked. Went and bought an E+ bundle ($117) using the Amex plat. Had $100 credit remaining on the Plat and the E+ bundle triggered the credit.
However, when I look at the cancel options in United, it only shows the cost of the standard Economy ticket back to a FFC, no mention of the E+ bundle.
Luckily, this is a flight I'm planning to take anyways so worst case scenario I've spent $17 out of pocket for E+.
Did the bundle include Priority Boarding? United has different refund policies for Priority Boarding vs E+ seat purchase. If you cancel the flight,
Priority Boarding is not refunded but the E+ seat selection is refunded (either to FFC or to the card). So that is why it may not show up directly. I would guess that if you then applied for a refund/FFC through their form, they would at least issue an FFC for a part of that bundle cost, however you may lose some of the funds that accounts for the Priority Boarding.
