The Chateau Laurier is a dump...agreed.

The Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver is the best if not one of the best hotels in Vancouver. The Fairmont Airport is also impressive. The Gold floor at Whistler was amazing. The Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City was equally impressive. Yes, some locations are not outstanding (Miramar) but to compare the chain to Hilton is an insult of the highest calibre. The level of service provided by Hilton/Starwood is FAR below Fairmont. Recently I had to spell Warsaw and Poland to a Starwood res agent

It depends on what you are looking for as well. If you are after modern and glamorous then most Fairmonts will not impress you. If you are a fan of history and great service then many will shine.
