On two occasions I have transitted recently, and a relatively new experience for me, my observation has been priority given to mainland passport holders sent to a separate queue. Now if in transit and at the East gates I find it quicker to just clear immigration and then re-enter via the terminal, though I guess only works for HKID card holders. Smoother and quicker experience.
