EI incurs the additional cost of check-in staff and baggage handling at both GLA and DUB and I get slightly inconvenienced. From the airline's perspective that seems idiotic, and as far as I'm concerned it's one less reason to choose EI vs. FR (and yes, I know FR would charge for the bag to go on board, but the base fare on FR is generally a lot less than EI).
If your bag is soft as you have stated, could it not easily squeeze into the overhead or underneath the seat in front? A backpack type of bag can squeeze into the sizers in the airports or will yours be overly stuffed?
