I certainly think upgrades are way harder now than pre COVID, but I also don't think one flight beside someone whose upgrade didn't clear means much.
I remember one Saturday god-awful early SFO-YVR where I was the only person in J. And then two weeks later on the same flight my upgrade didn't clear.
That PAX in question had a residence on the island and flew the route multiple times per year. The FAs seemed to recognize him and he got some off the books perks on the flight. I was basing the info on his interpretation as a frequent passenger on the route, not the one time.
