I'm not buying BA's 'rotating' theory with overall status numbers staying the same, but filled with higher-margin customers. Makes sense that some people are newly upgraded to Gold/GGL because they only fly 3 times/yr but on super-expensive tickets, but who is now going to be Silver who wasn't before? Someone buying 2 x £4k CW returns would have been BAEC Silver (assuming they picked up the final 40 oTPs somewhere), likewise 8 x £1k CE returns, or 16 x £500 ET returns. Plenty of examples where people are losing status, but pretty niche scenarios are required for people who are now gaining it who weren't before.
