I find that AA is just making this more complicated than it should be to figure this all out.

It'll be Trip Credit if travel has not commenced. Trip Credit is good as cash for booking flights on AA.com. You'll have 6 months from the date you cancel, but there are ways to get around the expiration date.
If you're cancelling, you may be able to switch one of your frequent flyer numbers to your AA number (without status) and get the full year's validity.
