After 24 hours, it’s a flight credit, which is only useful if you will fly that airline another time in a year. (If award, true, free cancellation).
And often times, I see a good deal and put it on hold because I need time to get off work, make sure my wife can get off work, etc. Usually 24 hours is enough for that, but I have taken 36 or so (put on hold in morning and then confirm next evening). Heck even for work trips, I always put one on hold and then try to coordinate travel with other teammates before confirming. It is very helpful for me.
