What makes it "looks like I can use."
When I go to change the reservation it shows me an how much more I have to pay for the ticket. When I get to the checkout page, it doesn't allow me to select using the certificate and presents the entire dollar amount I have to pay. In other words, the final total is not zero. The FFC was $1500.

It was 2 days old and not expiring until Dec. Perhaps it wasn't usable. It was also an ETC. My mistake
I couldn't get UA on the phone so I cancelled the reservation, got an FFC expiring next March and used the ETC that expires this year to book a new ticket.
Now I remember why I struggled to maintain silver - just so I could get a US based agent. I'm not even sure there still are US based agents for status holders - I haven't called them in 2 years until this week.
Thanks to both of you!
