Was flying OGG to DCA via ORD yesterday. After getting a text about delay on an incoming flight, I logged on to see my flight departing OGG being 1.5 hours late, causing me to miss my connection at ORD. They had already booked me onto the next flight to DCA, arriving about 5 hours late. When I called in, the very helpful lady I spoke to, offered to hold seats on my original flight from ORD in case it got delayed (like a bunch of flights out of ORD had experienced lately). Super nice gesture, but I remember when they would proactively reach out and offer this instead of waiting for us to call in. Additionally, this maneuver caused UA's systems not to slow me to check any luggage (since they didn't know what flights to tag it to), which took about 30 minutes to figure out.
5 hour delay, though. In Europe I'd be entitled to compensation...
