That's the old GPU method. You could add the domestic leg afterwards without issue. Since the advent of PlusPoints that's gone. You either request it all at once or not. Per jsloan's post, it's an additional 20 PPs. But you have another option: if the EWR-Europe flight still has PZ then you can cancel the current request and go back to coach on the ex-EWR flight. Then apply PPs all over again and both segments will upgrade immediately with PZ open. I would not downgrade yourself unless PZ is open because when you cancel your upgrade it's unlikely to go back into the PZ bucket. You would then clear RDU-EWR but be on the waitlist for EWR-Europe with no idea where on the list you'll be.
