‘Last Lap’ RTW Trip – ‘Nothing Familiar’
A very long time ago, I was a mileage runner who used to qualify on segments. I used the site SleepingInAirports.com and generally had a great time. In all my activities from 2006-2011, I amassed 1 Million Miles. I decided to spend them all on my family. I have no offspring so I used the miles to take each Niece and Nephew upon their High School Graduation to Europe. Great memories!
Now, as the end of my working career approaches, I decided to take one last adventure, a RTW proper. The World is changing fast, I do not know what the future holds and the opportunity is here now. My normal trips previously out of the country lasted 3 weeks. This time will be my longest at 6 weeks.
I have chosen countries and regions I have never been to before. World events may affect my original plans and routing. Here is the original routing without the dates.
LAR-DEN-LAX (UA)
LAX-DXB-MAA LAX-HKG-MAA (CX)
MAA-DXB-KIX (EK)
NRT-SIN (ZG)
SIN-KUL (MH)
KUL-DOH-WAW-KRK (QR)
KRK-WAW-OTP (LO)
OTP-LHR-DEN-LAR (BA)
My Departure from LAR is scheduled for 3-12 and departure from LAX is 3-13 Edit 3-15 & 3-16
I’m picking up some metal I’ve always dreamed of experiencing as well as carriers. A380 and EK primarily. It appears that the flight out of LAX on EK might be in trouble. The window for cancellation and refund is not open as of the time of this writing. I check everyday. It seems EK’s website goes through major changes each day with notices. If the flight goes, I will be on it. I have extended layovers in DXB each time I go through so that I can explore. I’m not one for heat, so we will see how this goes!
One thing about me is that I love retro-tech. When I was a mileage runner and traveling the world for business, volunteering, and sport as a World Class Athlete, I always had one thing with me, my MiniDisc player. iPods didn’t have the legs for long hauls back then, but my trusty MiniDisc devices did! 100+ hours on a single charge. I’ll be traveling with one again this time. I’m also taking an old school PSP with a UMD binder for movies and a book or two in paperback form. Carry-on and personal item only for 6 weeks! Some other old tech will be traveling with me as well.
I have paper backups of everything in case my mobile goes down. An old Casio F-91W digital watch on my left wrist for local time. And a dual time analog on my right with home and Zulu time.
I’m not going in with plans or expectations. I’m going to follow my senses. Perhaps wander into train stations and see the destinations on the wall and take day trips. I plan on seeing what is around my lodging. Small Cafe’s, shops, pubs, street food and the like.
The state I'm from has the fewest residents in the United States. It doesn't happen often, but I have encountered others from Wyoming when abroad. It is an instant bond when it happens. I've decided to signal pretty loudly on travel days that I'm from Wyoming with attire and adornments to my luggage to see who I can 'catch' with the displays. It has been said that Wyoming is a small town with really long streets! Normally, you can find someone you know in common with anyone you meet outside the state. Sort of like 7 degrees of Kevin Bacon!
