I've successfully managed to reroute my business class AKL-DOH-MAD flight I have for March 12 that was booked with AA miles (85k) on QR metal.
I got "lucky" and arrived MAD-DOH-AKL Feb 27 and been enjoying my trip to NZ. Now of course, with the situation, I no longer feel comfortable going back through DOH even if the airspace opens by the 12th of march when I'm supposed to fly back.
The process took about an hour with the agent having to get authorization to reroute me. I'm pleasantly surprised because considering AA does dynamic pricing (if you booked something from scratch, the miles ticket from AKL-DFW alone was over 200k miles in J, 125k in Y) they honored my already spent 85k miles for QR J and just rerouted on AA metal in J, no need to spend more miles or the difference, this is a big nice surprise.
So now I have AKL-DFW-MAD all in business. My advice is you call soon if you're also in this situation, no need to wait for QR to cancel if it's an award ticket, they'll just tell you AA needs to deal with it anyway because it's a 001 ticket number.
It's especially advised you do it asap as if you're stuck in Asia/Oceania as they might reroute you on something like Cathay and not necessarily though the US. The agent tried but most seats next week are already booked. He also tried the Qantas AKl-JFK flight but wasn't authorized.
Interesting to hear this update, appreciate you sharing! For folks who had QR tickets booked with Avios (aka not through partner miles), were you also able to get them to re-route you to another airline (oneworld or otherwise)?
I've got a SIN-DOH-FRA ticket in F/J that I booked via QR Avios; it's not till June so praying by then airspace is reopened and flights have resumed, but wanted to know if I can push them to re-ticket me to another oneworld carrier (say BA, CX, or JL) or even a Star Alliance one (LH / LX / SQ, given the route).
Not pushing for re-ticketing now since we're many months out - more just trying to understand my options in case I need to in a few months ... thanks in advance!
