Because it’s a challenge, operative word being challenge. Delta is drawing some line in halting elite inflation. AA’s challenge is more simple than stealing candy from a baby that doesn’t like sweets, a constant complaint over at the AA board is that >50% of the plane is in the elite groups. The challenge is not the only reason, but a once or twice a year flyer can pretty easily earn 1.5 years of Platinum status.

Show delta some $$$ before they make you gold in under half the miles regularly required.
