All airlines increase award levels all the time. We are used to that part.
Making you sweat until day of travel and they'd lose me in a heartbeat.
Just the THOUGHT of flying 14 hours in coach is a non starter for me.
Especially if I had top elite status on that airline, and a ton of miles.
Perhaps they are banking on pax such as yourself, booking more J tix to start with [Miles or Cash].
The door at NZ is open - Upgrades can be confirmed at anytime by any member whom is on a high enough fare OR Golds can confirm 72hrs out and Y --> J for Gold Elite's 12 months out.
