Also, once you have that single-segment (JFK-DCA) upgrade confirmed, you can then rebook the entire reservation to something completely different and preserve the SWU provided confirmable upgrade space is available. Really makes AA SWUs valid for 2+ years if you make a placeholder booking towards EOS.
