I have seen it the other way before where Customers told Crew whilst onboard, that the flight is cancelled when the operating crew had no idea.

it is not the easiest of situations right now in this world and you got back home safely so that’s the main thing as you say although it was a bit inconvenient.
the plane was meant to leave LGW at 830. gatwick website said update at 930 then update at 1330...at that point i was like this flight isnt going and i need to leave the island and get back before it gets locked down. when i spoke to them he said yeah its cancelled. but the app was still showing delayed without a time.
