I think each airline does its own dispatch calculations and decisions. But according to Flightradar24, JL42 is currently estimating a 12:40 flight time westbound from LHR to HND, while BA7 is estimating 13:04 eastbound. So JL is making better time with the westbound routing. It may be more of a wash for flights departing from the Continent.
JL42 seems to end somewhere around 13:10
BA is quite reluctant on the northern route, and it is not that rare that they go south around Russia Tokyo to London, at times when all other airlines go North around Canada. But BA7 came in at 12:46
But actually, JL46 and JL408 went south around, JL44 and JL48 went north. So a mixed bag today. Helsinki Haneda (JL48) is not too rare on the northern run.
