I think this may have more to do with weather than geopolitical considerations -- right now there are some weird vortexes over Turkey, Greenland, and the Aleutians that have pushed the jet stream pretty far south and created a reversed jet stream farther north, so it may actually be faster to fly Japan-Europe and Europe-Japan westbound.
