Yes, that behavior is normal, unfortunately.
However, all is not lost. It's more complicated, but you may be able to make this change without charge. Instead of using the regular SDC flow, go into your reservation and use the Change Flights link. Suppose you're flying AUS-IAH-CMH. You'd see "AUS-CMH" as your existing flight. Change that to AUS-
IAH, and then use the "Add flight" button to add IAH-CMH. (If the new flight gets added in
before your current flight, then make the
new one AUS-IAH and change the existing one to IAH-CMH; what's important is that they appear, in order, before you perform the search).
Now, when you do the search, it
should show you the K inventory on each leg, but still price it as a through K fare, meaning it is likely to calculate a $0 difference. No guarantees, but it's worth a try. Good luck!
