True. The other challenge is if you don't have enough points in your account to make the new lower cost award reservation before cancelling the old higher cost one. I for one would not be happy risking losing the award reservation altogether due to an issue with rebooking (e.g. race condition). Perhaps this is a design feature by Marriott to make it more difficult to optimize point costs for award reservations. YMMV....
