That's another reason I don't believe the "Chase made UA do it" story. If Chase made UA do it, UA would have cut off gift purchases of TB at the same time it cut off self purchases of TB. Of course if UA did want the revenue from TB purchases, it should have made a change just after Amex stopped reimbursing gifted TB purchases. Either way, the fact that there was for so long a split between gifted purchases not working and self purchases working suggests that both sides didn't really care if this was working one way or the other. Whether this persists now that both TB routes are cut off remains to be seen.
I'm not buying the "Chase did it" story either. To me it sounds more plausible that Amex had been wanting to prevent these ineligible charges from being reimbursement automatically for quite a long time, and now they finally hit upon a fix that made that happen no matter which way you purchase (gift or self).
