The outskirts of Pittsburgh are not the prettiest parts of the world but I chose this hotel because of its proximity to the US-22 highway which runs nearby. Also, it was easy to reach when approaching the city of Pittsburgh from the West. To be honest, it was yet another of those Holiday Inn Express properties which I will plan on avoiding for a future visit. The name Green Tree derives from the name of the hilly suburb where the hotel is located. The surroundings reminded me of a hilly dilapidated part of Glasgow that had been rejuvenated but somehow couldn't shake its image. Once again, the sort of people that were attracted to this HIX property weren't exactly awful, but I don't want to share my space with them. Having said that, HIX hotels are generally a good deal better in the USA than they are in Europe.

The breakfast area was just a seating area in the evening
Entering the hotel (it wasn't hugely clear where the main door was) reception was on the left. The breakfast area was on the right next to the windows with lots of natural light, and a seating area was in front of the reception desk deeper into the lobby space. The seats were covered with junk food debris and empty scrunched up snack packets all over the place (you see what I mean about the "sort of people" there?). Okay, one can spill one's popcorn, it can happen. But why can't they pick up the empty packets and some of the debris and put it in a nearby bin? I went early to breakfast the next morning and it was passable and the staff were really nice, but how can they run out of scrambled eggs before 7am? I know there's a shortage of eggs in the US just now (why?), but all the same.
My room in the Holiday Inn Express Green Tree resembles a room in Crowne Plaza hotels in Europe
The same room, looking back to the bathroom area (slightly different design) and main door
My room was on a high floor which was the highest floor of the hotel. It was blissfully peaceful up there and I had a good night in the comfortable bed. The room was once again nice and spacious, with those ubiquitous dark colours which seem to be the hallmark of American hotels. There was an extra seating area which made it more comfortable. Let's face it, nobody wants to linger in the bedroom of a European HIX hotel - but in the US the rooms are much nicer. The bathroom and shower facilities were perfectly good.
