Thank you very much for this interesting report on this lesser known part of Japan. As a European first time visitor of Japan (and Asia) I am writing this out of Kyoto, after spending time in Tokyo, Nagoya and before moving on to Osaka and only gradually adapting to this different but amazing part of the world.
Enjoy your trip! My first two Japan trips (first alone, second as couple) were also along the Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka line and those experiences enticed me to travel to the maybe little less known parts. Maybe it will be the same for you.
