Current (2/2026) warnings after CJNG cartel leader killed

On Sunday February 22, the New Generation Jalisco Cartel / Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes AKA “El Mencho” was taken by special forces of the Army of Mexico using intelligence provided by the U.S. Army. El Mencho was transported to Mexico City and died from wounds incurred during his capture. The upset and well armed minions of El Mencho are essentially running amok in some areas that were CJNG territory as they see possible loss of power and perks until the remaining leadership of CJNG sorts it out and sets boundaries with Sinaloa and other competing cartels. Air Canada, American Airlines and Air Canada have cancelled flights serving Puerto Vallarta as part of their response, Guadalajara airport closed Sunday due to unrest and reported gunshots, without specifying how long these cancellations will last.

This is definitively not a good time to visit Jalisco, from coast to Guadalajara - and several other states. Aristegui News says currently affected states include Colima, Jalisco, (state of) Mexico, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla and San Luís Potosí. Note the state of Mexico is not CDMX / Mexico City, the Capital. Other states report activities such as road blocks, fires, bank burning, etc.

Those in these areas are recommended to shelter and stay safe, others with travel plans to cancel or defer them for now.
