AA made an anti-customer decision because they thought the pilots had them over a barrel. It was a bad move and it should be removed from their next contract.
However, until the mandatory retirement age for pilots is increased, there's no longer a pilot shortage globally or we start flying in drones instead of planes, it's not going to happen. The erosion of loyalty programs will continue, with the possible brief pause caused by recession.
AA negotiated a contract in line with what other pilots were able to get from their competitors. You may not like that contract, but this would be like saying AA needs to ensure that they have your favorite brand of ginger ale when they negotiate their next catering deal. This isn't going to be high on AA's priority list in negotiating with pilots, nor should it be. There are so many other problems that impact AA more than the occasional F passenger being bumped to Y for a deadheading pilot.
