AA shuts down attempts for OW members to status match its elites very quickly. RJ offered a status match to US based AA elites and it was shut down in a week or so. It's possible to do a double status match across alliances, but a status match is only going to last for a year or so. If you either buy first when you want first, or have completely given up on upgrades anyway, crediting your travel to another program isn't a bad strategy.
