My approach was to go to the lounge on my own and very politely said to the friendly BA employee “I know it’s against the rules but we’re heading to Australia so would be lovely to stay together, can we pay etc…” She was lovely and said bring them over 😀
I would never normally ask, I was very polite and friendly and by not having them there with me I think it helped rather than crowding around the desk. In KUL I paid for them to get into the MH lounge (well worth it) and with QR we didn’t bother either at MEL or DOH
As is said, the irony is the Galleries lounge was rammed and I did feel a bit guilty but then again I had spent £££ on the flights and it was my first BA flight after gaining Silver. The final irony was I didn’t eat in the lounge as I thought I’d save my appetite for dinner on the flight …and then my GFML didn’t turn up so I ate almost nothing for over half a day 🤣 (I got a 2k Avios credit via the online support form which appears to be standard and arrives instantly via an automated system and standard “we’re sorry” response)

Even so, you did well to manage that at LHR these days. Espeically with adult children. But I fully agree with your wife - shy bairns get nowt.
Son should be working on his status. Especially after seeing what lounge gets him.
And badgering his wife to also go on mileage runs, as I have done (so we've adequate quota when we're flying with parents) (oh well, no more Pier First for the in-laws this year, didn't quite wrangle a OWE companion for my missus).
