The truth is that UA doesn't need a good mileage program. I believe that I'm a typical business flyer and I haven't been able to get a good mileage redemption on UA in almost 4 years.
And yet, I still fly UA around 85K miles per year (I fly on DL ~75K miles/yr) because I buy based only on price and routing and UA often has the best premium cabin pricing, or a better routing. There is more profit in CCs than the airline business, so Kirby is just trying to dangle a cheap prize in front of the pax base in an attempt to sell more CCs.
The Kirby Kwality Kuts:
1.
Polaris food is crap, and the clubs are meh.
2. FAs are unmotivated and often unpleasant.
3. Massive reductions in UG and J-award inventory.
3. CS is poor.
And yet, every flight is full. So pax will fly UA no matter what Kirby does.
