"Most people", as you say, will not necessarily live in a place that allows them to do local mattress runs.
To go back to my previous example, it will cost me <200€ return to fly to IST and make best use of the dozens of brands available there. Can I experience the local culture and the local cuisine along with that - by all means, there are at least 6-7 hours after checking in to do that, I sleep in the following morning, have a relaxing breakfast and do a stressless transfer to the next place, and continue exploring.
Not everyone's idea of "enjoying travelling" is to splurge in a hotel room or a hotel lounge ... It is all about willing to make the time investment to make it happen within the boundaries of ones financial situation.
