The upgrade processor logic I have seen as of late is to process upgrades around T-22 if there are more than 2 F seats available. This leaves 2 seats for tens of dollars upgrade for the general member while the MVPs (err "STATUS HOLDERS") die on the list. Miracles do happen, though.

I don't think there's any doubt AS changed its internal policies and is now holding back U space in order to sell upgrades. The change seemed to occur exactly when they implemented paid upgrades via the app. The occasional unicorn notwithstanding (I got one recently, with an instant upgrade at purchase).
That's very similar to UA, where they'll either clear to J3 at T-36 or J2 at T-24.
Not to mention, I got *two* push notifications to $pay$ for an upgrade about T-48? Ugh...
