About 18 months ago I tried to use Avios to upgrade a W cash flight from the UK to Carribean. I was equally unimpressed with the cost and decided not to bother. I got much better value for those Avios on ultra long haul J redemptions. For JFK-LHR W is perfectly fine, it's a fairly short journey and IMO a very big upgrade in comfort over Y although it doesn't look like much on paper.
