In probably over 40 visits to Thailand I've never been asked for an onward or return ticket.
The only time it happened to me was by AA at SAN. The airline apparently gets stuck with putting the passenger on a flight home if Thailand refuses entry. I bought a refundable ticket to resolve that issue, which I cancelled in Tokyo.
