Seems like a very typical NY experience to me…
Reading your experience about messy discounts, what’s included or not, etc was exactly what I faced at Sofitel NY.
And for prices…well going anywhere in NY is a constant extorsion of money

But the room looks nice

It is - but bear in mind that I booked one of the most expensive room categories (actually the highest of "regular" rooms before you move to rooms with balconies -not necessarily nicer but more expensive and junior ("studios") and one bedroom (platinum) suites. The entry level rooms seem to have similar decor but are quite a bit smaller, in particular the show rooms, and only have one window.
And yes I agree on price and the "nickelling and diming". I also find it "funny" that they have a different (buffet - in my view less good) breakfast on weekend which happens to be the time when diamonds would get free breakfast included (check in staff actually confirmed that I would have got free breakfast on weekends, but obviously my rate included breakfast so that was irrelevant. I also did wonder if the confusion between $40 or 50 credit was due to the 50 credit was related to my paid breakfast whilst the 40 would have been the credit for the "free" diamond breakfast though I may be wrong.
