The 747-400 doesn’t have the range to do routes like YYZ-HKG/PEK/PVG/ICN, YVR-SYD. AC opened those with the 340
The speed thing is an urban myth. We flew the 340 (and 330) at cruise machs of .80-.84 depending on whether we had a headwind or tailwind. The 747-400 cruises at .85-.86. Yes it’s faster but that hardly makes a difference. It was faster than anything else until the 787 came along. The 767 cruises at .80.
We fly the 787 at .84-.86.
