YFS Airport Fort Simpson, NT, Canada
Although we have been in smaller airports YFS is the smallest one with numerous scheduled flights. When we lived in Canada’s Northwest Territories, we would often drive in mid winter for two and a half hours over ice roads and ice bridges to get to Fort Simpson Airport to catch connecting flights via Yellowknife to Vancouver. We would arrive at the airport before the staff and turn on the lights. The doors were always unlocked because there was a small Indigenous settlement close by and the airport offered a warm place and facilities for people to stop and warm up on their journeys between the town and the settlement.
