I don't see the absurdity in it at all.
Children eat free is usually set with an expectation of small children who don't really eat a lot, and where it feels more absurd to charge a full price. Once you get to 12-14 and up children probably eat more than a lot of adults.
Admittedly, that only applies to the buffet, as the set Japanese meal is not variable no matter how hungry they are. Unless they can evade the snipers you mentioned above.
