Take one of the frequent PDX-SEA flights the next morning (low risk of missing the cruise) and then Uber into the port (or rent a car and drive from Portland.)
While I agree it could be an option, a quick check of Alaska flights that day show around $150 pp, plus a PDX hotel will run about $200 a night (for a decent place) - so that's $500 right there plus the logistics, I'd just pay the incremental cost of a couple hundred more and stay in Seattle ($600 or so a night was mentioned). Plus we don't even know if he could change his flight to PDX.
