Are you familiar with the altitude and summer temperature at Madrid? Back of the envelope calculation points to a takeoff thrust of about 85% of the thrust at 20 C and sea level. Plus, effect on range is larger than proportional. More or less consistent with a 25% drop in range in Madrid in summer.
You might have a fair point but one of AC's executives was interviewed by Open Jaw or the Air Current and they said the maximum practical range for the XLR with full passengers and cargo was YYZ to Nice or Milan. A quick look that's basically 3600nm
