That sounds crazy - you may already have done that anyway, but just in case, have you tried splitting your stay into two or three stays (depending on length). I've found that in NYC it often helps as sometimes even a single day can make it impossible to find space on a 4-5 day stay and the split can help "slalom" between occupancy issues...
